These dramas can help fill the void left by the mediocrity of ‘True Detective’

Season one was great, and season two...isn’t.

After a season’s worth of highs, lows, plot twists, and suspense, True Detective fans were eager for a second. Crossing their fingers that it could live up to its first go-around, avid (if anxious) viewers tuned in for the premiere on June 21.

We gave it a five-episode grace period, and the verdict is all but in: This season kind of stinks.

And the thing is, the terrific ride of the eight original episodes doesn’t obligate you to see this lackluster season through. Without the continuity of characters, crime, or setting, there’s basically nothing tying the show to the Matthew McConaughey greatness that mesmerized us in the first place.
