Tina Fey says people should skip counter-protests, eat cake instead

Comedian and former Saturday Night Live cast member Tina Fey appeared on Weekend Update Thursday night with a plan for how to address future white nationalist rallies: Eat cake.

“I would urge people this Saturday, instead of participating in the screaming matches and potential violence, find a local business you support, maybe a Jewish-run bakery or an African American-run bakery, order a cake with the American flag on it…and just eat it,” said Fey, a University of Virginia alumna. Violence broke out at a white nationalist rally this past weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, the home of UVA.

On Weekend Update, Fey proceeded to stab a sheet cake as she discussed Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, and President Donald Trump’s comments following the events in Charlottesville. Other cities around the country, including Boston, have similar rallies planned for this weekend.

Fey urged people who are upset to not attend counter-protests and yell at Nazis and Klansmen, but rather to yell into cake.

And if your family tells you to calm down? Fey has a solution for that, too.

“That is when you need to dip a grilled cheese into the cake,” she said between mouthfuls of pastry.
