With vaccination levels rising, many Massachusetts residents may be wondering: “Will I be able to see Fourth of July fireworks shows near me in 2021?” The answer depends on what town you live in.

While there are more Fourth of July fireworks displays scheduled in Massachusetts this year than in 2020, many towns chose to preemptively cancel their 2021 fireworks celebrations earlier this spring.

As recently as early May, the state’s COVID restrictions meant that crowd sizes would have to be kept to a bare minimum, and the state’s decision to lift nearly all COVID restrictions on May 29 came months ahead of schedule. By that point, many towns didn’t have time to reconfigure their Independence Day events to include fireworks.

“Because of the timing of Governor Baker’s lifting of COVID restrictions, and taking into account the amount of time and planning that goes into this event, we do not have sufficient time nor resources to put together a Fourth of July celebration that lives up to the name of our Parade and Fireworks of years past,” Freetown’s parade and fireworks organizers wrote on Facebook on May 21. “When the decision was made in April to cancel the event, the state was still shut down, and events of this caliber were not permitted for the foreseeable future.”

Nevertheless, some cities and towns have been able to quickly pivot and ensure that their fireworks displays continue. In Boston, the annual Boston Pops July Spectacular will be a split celebration, with the concert taking place at the Tanglewood music venue in western Massachusetts and the fireworks lighting up the city sky on Boston Common.

In all, more than 40 fireworks shows will celebrate America’s independence from June 26 to July 12, according to a list of permitted fireworks displays provided to Boston.com by the state’s Department of Fire Services.

According to DFS spokesman Jake Wark, while there are no restrictions on town fireworks displays at a state level, residents should check with their local town officials regarding any last-minute changes to their Fourth of July fireworks, either weather-related or otherwise.
