Narragansett once again revives retro ‘Jaws’ can

Narragansett Beer

In case you needed a reason to drink more beer this summer, Narragansett Beer is once again bringing back the can design that famously appeared in one of the most recognized scenes from Jaws.

For the movie’s previous anniversaries, the company has prompted beer drinkers to “honor the man, crush the can,’’ a nod to Quint, the shark hunter played by Robert Shaw. ‘Gansett created #crushitlikeQuint for those who want to share their variation of the scene on social media.

June 20 marks 40 years since the debut of the summer blockbuster, which director Steven Spielberg shot on Martha’s Vineyard.

Any major liquor store in Massachusetts that sells 12 oz. Narragansett cans in packs of 30, 18, or 12 will carry the retro design, according to Narragansett president and CEO Mark Hellendrung.

Fenway Park is also currently selling the cans, and Hellendrung says most golf courses and patio bars in New England also offer the throwback packaging.

The can Quint famously threw back on the big screen would have been thicker and heavier than today’s, but the revived can design is identical. The beer company’s manufacturers told Boston.com that the original 70s cans “would have been harder to crush than the aluminum cans of today, which have benefited from 40 years of additional engineering.’’

“It just goes to show everyones fixation with that movie,’’ Hellendrung said of the anniversary celebrations. “It gets bigger every year.’’
