This Italian-American eatery was named one of Bon Appétit’s best new restaurants in America

The magazine says Oberlin is home to “one of the most talented young chefs in the country.”

Food and dining magazine Bon Appétit released the 2016 edition of its “Hot 10” best new restaurants in America list Tuesday, and a seafood-centric Italian-American spot less than an hour from Boston made the cut.

Oberlin, which opened in downtown Providence, Rhode Island in January 2016, is the brainchild of chef Benjamin Sukle, who Bon Appétit calls “one of the most talented young chefs in the country,” and who they praise for “cooking with his gut.”

Oberlin’s menu contains an enviable raw bar and wine list, but it’s the restaurant’s pasta-making ability that sets it apart, according to Bon Appétit.

“Pillowy gnocchi with littlenecks in a chive-flecked broth (the only clam chowder I’ll ever crave) should be inducted into the better-than-the-original hall of fame,” the magazine writes. “The pici with pork ragù would make any nonna seethe with envy.”

Before you hop in a car and head to Providence, be warned: in an effort to give Oberlin a “neighborhood” vibe and encourage regular patrons, the 50-seat restaurant does not take reservations. If you’re looking for a similarly lauded new restaurant a little closer to Boston, Juliet, a cafe in Somerville’s Union Square, and Shepard, a restaurant minutes from Harvard Square, were among the magazine’s 50 finalists for the Hot 10.
