Doughnut shops around the city are bracing for National Doughnut Day on Friday.

“We are planning on making as many doughnuts as is humanly possible,” said Josh Danoff, owner of Union Square Donuts. “I feel like National Doughnut Day has become like a holiday.”

Danoff, who is bringing in a disc jockey for the occasion, said National Doughnut Day gets bigger every year at his Boston-area shops.

Over at Blackbird Doughnuts in the South End and the Fenway, Chef Anna Perna said she’ll make quadruple the amount of doughnuts she usually makes on a Friday.

National Doughnut Day, which takes place on the first Friday of June each year, honors the female Salvation Army volunteers who provided doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.

Some local shops will offer free doughnuts to celebrate, and others will roll out new flavors created specifically for the day. Here’s a list of deals and specials you can find across New England on Friday.

Blackbird Doughnuts

Blackbird Doughnuts will make more than 6,500 doughnuts on National Doughnut Day, according to Perna. Customers waiting in line before Blackbird’s two shops open at 7 a.m. will receive free doughnut holes with vanilla glaze and sprinkles while supplies last “as a thank you for coming out,” she said.

Once inside, customers can choose between two big names.

“We are going to be bringing back two of our best-selling favorites to our menu: salted toffee and triple chocolate,” Perna said. “We get tons and tons of requests for those doughnuts all year long, so we thought we’d bring them back.”

The salted toffee, made with brioche dough and a glaze of brown sugar, butter, and cream, is topped with sea salt. The triple chocolate, which Perna called the shop’s “most decadent doughnut,” is a chocolate old-fashioned cake doughnut with chocolate ganache and sprinkles on top. Both cost $3 and are available Friday only while supplies last, Perna said.

Dunkin’ Donuts

On Friday at Dunkin’, customers can get a free classic doughnut with the purchase of any beverage. Those classic doughnuts include Boston Kreme, chocolate frosted, double chocolate, glazed, glazed blueberry, glazed chocolate, jelly, old-fashioned, powdered, vanilla creme, vanilla frosted, butternut, glazed stick, coconut, maple frosted, French cruller, lemon, and strawberry frosted.

You’ll have to take a close look, though, because the standards will be dressed up and renamed for the occasion. For example, the Boston Kreme will be frosted with chocolate dipping icing and blue icing drizzle and will be called “Boston Kreme Bash.”

Union Square Donuts

Union Square Donuts will debut a brand new flavor on Friday: the Donutella. The fresh flavor — $4 and only available on Friday — will feature a creamy milk chocolate glaze made with Frangelico and topped with toasted hazelnuts.

“It’s our version of a Nutella doughnut,” Danoff said.

Customers in Union Square’s Somerville location can bite into the new doughnut while jamming to tunes by DJ KDudz from 8 a.m. to noon.

The Donutellas, which will also be available at the shop’s Brookline and Boston Public Market locations, will be served “until we run out of glaze,” Danoff said.

Kane’s Donuts

You can get 15 doughnuts for the price of 12 at Kane’s Donuts on Friday. The shop is once again offering its “super dozen” deal, which means customers get three free doughnuts for every dozen purchased.

You can choose from the following classic doughnuts: honey dip, maple bacon, raised frosted, butter crunch, coconut, plain, cinnamon, Boston cream, jelly, honey lemon, apple fritters, chocolate honey dip, and turtle. You can also pick from three gluten-free varieties: chocolate, old-fashioned, and orange burst.
