There’s a new place for sipping java in Harvard Square.
Blue Bottle Coffee opened its first Massachusetts location in Cambridge on Saturday inside a bright, 1,400 square-foot space that seats 22 people.
Customers can order single-origin and blend coffees, espresso, cold brew, and New Orleans-style iced coffee, which is cold-brewed for 12 hours with roasted chicory and then sweetened with organic cane sugar and simple syrup before whole organic milk is added.
The shop’s coffee, which is supplied by the company’s roastery in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, is roasted within 48 hours so customers can “enjoy the ascent to peak flavor,” according to the company’s website.
“We were inspired to make our way to Boston due to its rich history and thriving academic communities, and Harvard Square is the ideal location for our first cafe,” said Bryan Meehan, CEO of Blue Bottle Coffee, in a statement. “The city’s coffee scene has been gaining momentum over the past few years, and we’re looking forward to joining the community and sharing our passion for thoughtfully sourced, freshly-roasted coffee beans with locals and visitors alike.”
Hungry patrons can choose from a rotating food menu that includes Liège waffles, toasts, pastries, and chia seed pudding.
For those who like the shop’s cold brew and New Orleans-style iced coffee but are in a hurry, the shop sells cold brew bottles and cans, as well as New Orleans-style ice coffee in cartons. The shop will host coffee classes taught by baristas on topics that range from brewing techniques to bean varietals. Items for sale at the shop include tote bags, travel mugs, cups, coffee makers, and packages of the company’s Perfectly Ground coffee in single-serve envelopes.
Blue Bottle Coffee first opened in California’s Bay Area in 2002 and now has 50 cafes in the following seven cities: Oakland, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., Miami, Tokyo, and now Boston. The company plans to open two more Massachusetts locations in 2018, both in Boston: one inside the Prudential Center and one at 100 Federal St.
