When the team behind well-known local restaurants Island Creek Oyster Bar and Row 34 debuted Les Sablons in April 2017, it was a big deal. Located in the unique conductor’s building on Bennett Street in Harvard Square, across from The Charles Hotel, the stylish spot featured a French-inspired menu on the upper level and an oyster and cocktail bar on the ground floor. Les Sablons was even named a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best New Restaurant this past February.
So it’s noteworthy that the team suddenly announced Thursday that the restaurant had closed for good.
A statement on behalf of the owners gave no reason as to why doors have shuttered.
“Les Sablons is closing its doors, beginning on Thursday, August 2nd, 2018,” the statement read. “Partners Jeremy Sewall, Garrett Harker, Shore Gregory and Skip Bennett, will continue to move forward, focusing their efforts on what they do best: creating distinct moments of hospitality around the table and celebrating New England’s rich seafood traditions. They have profound gratitude for the entire Les Sablons team and the work they put into making every dining experience special. The team will continue to operate Island Creek Oyster Bar in Kenmore Square and Burlington, in addition to Row 34 in Fort Point and Portsmouth, NH.”
Les Sablons’ website is now blank with only a parting message: “To all of our neighbors and friends, it is with a heavy heart that we share the news that as of today, Thursday, August 2nd, Les Sablons is closing its doors. We hold an immense amount of gratitude for all of your support and for welcoming us in to your lives over the last year and a half. Above all, we want to express our thanks to our entire Les Sablons team and all the hard work they put into making every dining experience special. We look forward to seeing all your familiar faces at our sister restaurants throughout New England.”
