After months of anticipation, James Beard Award winner and “Top Chef” alum Karen Akunowicz quietly debuted her first restaurant, Fox & the Knife, with a soft open on Saturday. After closing on Sunday to regroup, the restaurant officially opened for aperitivo and dinner on Monday night.
The former Myers & Chang chef has created a cozy Italian enoteca in Southie, with dishes that were inspired, in part, by her time spent in Modena, Italy, where she developed her pasta-making skills. Located in the former Maiden space across from the Broadway T stop (and outfitted with a bold “Stay Foxy” neon sign), Fox & the Knife offers aperitivo starting at 4 p.m. and dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m., seven days a week.
Fox & the Knife’s aperitivo — the pre-dinner Italian tradition akin to happy hour or cocktail hour — includes small bites like house-made ricotta, prosciutto, fried chili chickpeas, and harissa-marinated olives. The dinner menu follows a traditional Italian format with pane, antipasti, primi, and secondi categories, and boasts everything from focaccia and Caesar-style broccoli to stick-to-your-bones tagliatelle bolognese with wild boar, saffron spaghetti with clams, and harissa-braised lamb. Antipasti range from $9 to $14, while primi and secondi dishes range from $20 to $29.
Akunowicz is joined by executive sous chef Molly Dwyer, sous chef Tessa Bristol, and GM and wine director Alexandra Hayden, who has put together a list of amari, aperitifs, and mostly natural wines.
