And then there were six.
On Wednesday morning, the James Beard Foundation announced the finalists for the 2019 James Beard Awards — celebrating restaurants, chefs, and industry professionals — at a livestreamed ceremony at Hugo’s in Houston. From the list of 18 Massachusetts semifinalists, a fraction of finalists made the final cut.
Tiffani Faison (Tiger Mama), Tony Messina (Uni), and Cassie Piuma (Sarma) are still in the running for Best Chef—Northeast. Maura Kilpatrick (Sofra Bakery and Café) is a finalist for Outstanding Baker, and Ken Oringer (Little Donkey, Toro, Uni, and others) is a finalist for Outstanding Restaurateur.
In addition to categories that nominate chefs and restaurants, the James Beard Foundation recognizes various forms of media in the food realm. In the Book Awards category, Milk Street’s Christopher Kimball was nominated for his cookbook “Milk Street: Tuesday Nights,” which highlights creative weeknight meals.
Other New England finalists include James Mark of North and Benjamin Sukle of Oberlin, both in Providence, for Best Chef—Northeast, and Rob Tod of Allagash Brewing Company in Portland, Maine, for Outstanding Wine, Spirits, or Beer Producer.
Massachusetts was left out of a number of categories with the elimination of haley.henry and The Butcher Shop from the Outstanding Wine Program category, and Ana Sortun of Oleana in Cambridge from the Outstanding Chef category.
The 2019 James Beard Award winners will be announced in a ceremony at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on May 6 (and livestreamed for the public on Twitter at @beardfoundation). They will be hosted by actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson.
