There are sure signs of spring in Boston: Patios begin popping up like daisies. The first pitch is thrown out at Fenway Park. And seafood shacks and takeout spots start serving steaming plates of regional favorites.
That last category includes the Back Bay’s Cusser’s Roast Beef & Seafood, whose takeout window is now open with roast beef sandwiches, lobster rolls, and whoopie pies.
The seasonal Park Square walk-up window, which debuted in May 2018, sits adjacent to Moon Bar and two floors below Mooncusser Fish House, and is the brainchild of Mooncusser and Moon Bar owners Ian Calhoun, Carolyn Johnson, and Vincent Vela. Dedicated to providing an easy, grab-and-go lunch (the window is open weekdays from 11:30 p.m.–2 p.m.), Cusser’s serves sandwiches, soups, salads, and various seafood fare.
There’s the North Shore-style roast beef sandwich with barbecue sauce, mayonnaise, and cheese, as well as the Thoreau-style, with cheddar cheese, pickled red onions, and Thoreau sauce. A hot dog comes with bread-and-butter pickle relish, while the lobster roll can be served hot with beurre rouge or cold with tarragon mayonnaise. The Mooncusser chowder is thick with clams, smoked scallops, and skate, and the chopped salad is filled with seasonal vegetables and tossed with sunflower ranch dressing. Sides are simple: onion rings, fries, coleslaw, chips.
As for the seafood, the fish options run the gamut, from swordfish souvlaki and fish tacos to a tuna burger and beer-battered fish and chips. Whatever you order, you should finish it off with a whoopie pie — it’s the window’s only dessert.
And speaking of whoopie pies, the first 25 people in line during Cusser’s opening hours this week will each score a free one. Customers will also receive a free pink lemonade with every purchase until Friday, whether they’re dining in or taking out.
