A roast beef sandwich from Nick’s Famous Roast Beef in Beverly is in the spotlight after being named one of the best sandwiches in the country.

People magazine recently partnered with online restaurant guide The Infatuation to release a list of the best sandwiches in every state (and Washington, D.C.). The large beef sandwich with cheese and sauce from Nick’s Famous Roast Beef was dubbed the best sandwich in Massachusetts.

Other New England winners included the grilled Abbers panini from Firehouse Deli in Connecticut, the brown butter lobster roll from Eventide Oyster Company in Maine, the Big Papi from Nashua Garden in New Hampshire, the Juggs from Geoff’s Superlative Sandwiches in Rhode Island, and the Route 9 Roast Beef from Vermont Country Deli.

Nick’s Famous Roast Beef — which opened its doors in 1975 and serves sandwiches, subs, burgers, and plates of roast beef and pastrami — has not been without controversy. According to the Boston Globe, Nick’s found itself in hot water in 2015 when owners Nicholas Koudanis, Nicholas Markos, and Eleni Koudanis were charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud the US by obstructing the IRS and 10 counts of aiding and assisting in the filing of false tax returns. The indictment alleged that between 2008 and 2013 the owners evaded nearly $1 million in taxes by failing to accurately report cash receipts. Steven Koudanis, the son of Nicholas Koudanis, was also charged with one count of attempting to obstruct the IRS.

A February 2017 Facebook post from the sandwich shop addressed the charges, stating, “We have fully accepted responsibility for our past tax issues and are still ready to serve our faithful customers.”
