Breakfast tacos are an elusive dish in Boston, but one Cambridge brewery is making it easier to find the Southwest staple.
Daytime cafe Pepita Coffee opened inside Lamplighter Brewing Co. on Monday morning, replacing its recently closed predecessor, Longfellows. On the menu, diners can find four varieties of breakfast tacos — bean and bacon, chorizo and egg, carnitas and egg, and elote and potato — alongside avocado tostadas, jalapeño cornbread, and an assortment of sweet breakfast pastries. The tacos are served on flour tortillas, though corn tortillas are available upon request.
Lamplighter founder Cayla Marvil and AC Jones are behind the new cafe.
“We’re trying to play to aspects of the Austin taco scene,” said Marvil. “[In Austin], it definitely stood out that tacos were everywhere, and they were so delicious. I love a good breakfast sandwich and avocado toast as much as the next person, but why don’t we have breakfast tacos [here] when we have so many [breakfast] burritos?”
Pepita’s drink menu includes standard coffee options — drip, pour-over, espresso, cappuccino, latte, French press, and more, all of which use beans from Barrington Coffee Roasters — as well as a spicy chocolate mocha, nitro cold brew, and a coquito slushie with cinnamon, espresso, and coconut milk. Those looking for a boozy breakfast drink can order a michelada starting at 11 a.m.
The idea for Pepita was conceived after Longfellows founder Alisha Fowler relocated to New Jersey with her family.
“We spent a bit of time when [Fowler] told us deciding whether we wanted to keep this going,” Marvil said. “Ultimately, we decided we loved the coffee program and the space, and that we were going to open a concept ourselves. We thought, ‘how do we want to make it different and fun?’ We thought back to a trip in Austin and the breakfast tacos we ate there.”
