Since opening its doors in February, Fox & the Knife has garnered local and national acclaim, with James Beard award winner Karen Akunowicz at the helm. Five months later, the victory train shows no sign of slowing.

The Italian enoteca in Southie just landed on Eater’s 2019 Best New Restaurants in America list, a roster of 16 restaurants that made an impression this year. Curated by a handful of Eater editors, the list features newcomers from across the country — Kentucky, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Texas — and spans a wide range of cuisines, from Indian to Korean to Mexican.

Fox & the Knife’s entry on the unranked list was contributed by Eater Boston’s editor, Rachel Leah Blumenthal, who commended the restaurant for standing out in a sea of other Italian eateries in Boston.

“Boston is awash in red sauce joints, especially in its traditionally Italian-American North End neighborhood, but regionally specific Italian restaurants are far rarer,” Blumenthal wrote. “So James Beard Award winner Karen Akunowicz cut her own path with her solo debut, a lovely ode to Emilia-Romagna.”

The praise continued with a nod to Akunowicz’s tigelle, a disc-shaped bread that the chef previously told reminds her of her time spent cooking in Modena.

“I think they’re beautiful,” Akunowicz said. “[I encountered tigelle] 10 years ago when I lived in Modena, and I knew that it was something I would someday want to put on the menu.”

This isn’t the first award that Fox & the Knife has scooped up since it opened. In May, the restaurant landed on Food & Wine‘s Best New Restaurants list. Shortly thereafter, Akunowicz opened SloPoke, a poke shop within the Whole Foods Market at Charles River Plaza.

Other Eater winners on this year’s Best Restaurants in America list include Erizo, an eco-conscious seafood restaurant in Portland, Ore.; The Jerk Shack, a casual Jamaican eatery in San Antonio, Texas; and Tacos 1986, a Tijuana-style taco stand in Los Angeles.
