South Boston’s Coppersmith is closing in January, but not before throwing a handful of farewell events

The bar and restaurant will make way for a new biotech development.

As one rooftop bar opens in Southie, another is set to close: On Wednesday, Coppersmith announced that it will shutter its bar, restaurant, and rooftop lounge in January 2020, as plans for a new life sciences development are proposed to take over the building on West 3rd St. The popular restaurant opened in 2015, and its rooftop bar quickly became a coveted place to drink on sunny afternoons.

“Due to our building being repurposed for a forthcoming development, Coppersmith’s run in South Boston is sadly coming to an end,” said general manager Sheila Senat in a press release. “Rest assured, though, we will be going out with a bang! Our community is so important to us and our customers deserve the best, so we will be hosting an exciting lineup of events until we ultimately say goodbye in January.”

According to the Boston Business Journal, a 210,000-square-foot lab building, with the potential for ground-level retail space, is set to take over a 1.1-acre lot that, in addition to Coppersmith, currently includes a number of industrial buildings. Developers are scheduled to start construction in 2020 and finish the project in 2022.

Check out the full list of events on Coppersmith’s farewell tour, and be sure to stop by for one last drink before it closes early next year.
