Consider it a necessary square on your “Fall in New England” bingo card: A bag of apple cider doughnuts, eaten messily in the parking lot of a pick-your-own farm.
Come fall, you can find these seasonal doughnuts everywhere, including orchards, doughnut shops, markets, and grocery stores. So where to start?
To help narrow down the best cider doughnuts in Massachusetts, Boston.com recently asked readers to vote on their favorite places to stock up on the ubiquitous fall treats. The list, based on reader favorites from last year, included farms and doughnut shops across the state. As it turned out, more than 1,400 readers had a lot more suggestions than the ones we listed.
From our selection of 36 apple cider doughnut destinations in Massachusetts, 17 percent of readers chose ‘other,’ naming their own favorite spots to buy a dozen (more on that below). From the locations we did name, Honey Pot Hill Orchards in Stow came away with 13 percent of the votes, while Kane’s Donuts (various locations), Smolak Farms in North Andover, Russell Orchards in Ipswich, and Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury all trailed close behind, with around six to eight percent of the votes.
So which locations were readers naming as ‘other’ options for cider doughnuts? Roughly 38 percent of the votes went to Adams Farm, which has outposts in both Wrentham and Cumberland, Rhode Island. Wilson Farm in Lexington snagged 17 percent of the ‘other’ votes, Westward Orchards in Harvard garnered six percent, and Volante Farms in Needham and Tougas Family Farm in Northborough each scored around five percent. Some other favorites included Shelbourne Farm in Stow and Bolton Orchards in Bolton. And if you don’t feel like trekking out to a farm, apparently Market Basket has you covered for stand-out cider doughnuts, too.
