Outdoor Dining
Outdoor dining in Boston gets an earlier start date
Spring is well underway, and with it comes the return of a long-awaited seasonal feature: patios.
Patios feel especially necessary this year. With mandated social distancing due to the coronavirus pandemic, restaurants have had to significantly limit the number of customers in their indoor dining rooms. Last year, the City of Boston piloted a temporary outdoor dining program to help restaurants offer additional seating, allowing establishments that don’t already have their own patio space to expand seating into parking spots and alleys. This year, the outdoor dining program kicked off on March 22, with the exception of North End restaurants, which were allowed to open their temporary patios on April 1.
Some restaurants that already have an outdoor dining permit offered patio seating throughout the winter, using fire pits and igloos to help keep customers warm. Others opened their patios sporadically depending on the weather or debuted their outdoor space in the past few weeks.
Below, take a look at some Boston restaurants that currently offer patio dining or have plans to launch it in the coming weeks and months, and check back as we continue to update this list throughout the spring.
