Food & Wine recently declared something we already know: One of America’s best burgers is right in our own backyard.

On Monday, the publication released a list detailing the best burgers in every state, a lengthy catalogue of the country’s most celebrated patties. Author David Landsel’s pick for Massachusetts was a shoe-in: Craigie on Main‘s coveted Craigie Burger.

Landsel praised Tony Maws’s revered Cambridge dining spot, noting that the chef had tried to “create the kind of burger that he’d like to see in the world, the one he would like to eat regularly.”

“If this was a diversion tactic, it backfired — what seemed like half of Boston showed up to the restaurant, said they’d have what he was having, and the burger became a local icon,” Landsel wrote. “Getting your hands around one in pre-pandemic times was a whole rigamarole. These days, a few taps on your phone and you’ve got one to go — grass-fed local beef, cheddar from Vermont, lettuce, red onions, and a housemade ketchup spiked with mace, on a perfect roll from Clear Flour Bakery, one of Food & Wine’s 100 best bakeries in America.”

Craigie on Main currently offers outdoor dining on its adjacent patio, dubbed Craigie Next Door. The restaurant is taking a break in August, with indoor dining to come at a later date.

A slew of other New England restaurants received praise for their burgers, including Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, Conn.; Palace Diner in Biddeford, Maine; Gilley’s PM Lunch in Portsmouth, N.H.; Stanley’s Famous Hamburgers in Central Falls, R.I.; and Prohibition Pig in Waterbury, Vt.
