Where to get an ice cream treat for your hot dog

The Bethel Sugar Shack serves soft serve vanilla ice cream topped with small dog bones for canine friends.

During the dog days of summer, there’s no better way to beat the heat than to lick into an ice cream — especially if you’re a dog. Good news: There are tail-wagging spots that serve doggie ice cream treats your four-legged friends will drool over this summer.

Here’s the scoop on where to get a treat for your panting pooch, and where you’ll be begging for your own cone or sundae.

Bar Boulud

The Canine Café menu at this bistro in Boston’s Mandarin Oriental hotel features an Au Jus Ice (ice cubes of chicken or beef stock frozen in a paw print mold), a watermelon “Pupsicle,’’ and a “Pup Cup’’ (homemade vanilla frozen yogurt with peanut butter drizzle and oatmeal crumble) — all part of Pastry Chef Robert Differ and Chef de Cuisine Michael Denk’s Bark Boulud dining program. The icy treats are served to your four-legged friend while you dine on the seasonal terrace. Take a pic of your pooch wearing a signature #BarkBoulud beret or curled French mustache, and then post it on your dog’s Instagram account (admit it, there is one). www.barboulud.com

Polka Dog Bakery

The Bear & The Rat frozen yogurt for dogs is served at this canine bakery in Boston’s South End. Your four-legged bestie can choose from banana and peanut butter or peanut butter and bacon. “Many people buy them after a trip to the park to help their pup cool down,’’ says a spokeswoman for the shop. “They’re all natural and include probiotics, so are great for their stomachs.’’ www.polkadog.com

FoMu

Order your pooch a pup sundae at this vegan ice cream shop with four Boston locations, including the South End and Newbury Street. The shops are stocked with treats sourced from local doggie bakeries like Polkadog Bakery and Camberville Dog Treats, that are then topped with a scoop of FoMu plant-based homemade ice cream — made from a base of coconut milk and canine-friendly organic sweeteners. Ice cream flavors include avocado, sweet lavender, and vanilla-bean. www.fomuicecream.com

Polar Cave Ice Cream Parlour

This Cape ice cream spot in Mashpee has been dishing out Pup Cups — a scoop of vanilla ice cream with a dog biscuit on top — since opening 16 years ago. “We serve as many as a couple of dozen Pup Cups to our four-legged friends daily,’’ says owner Mark Lawrence. www.polarcave.com
