A Canton gas station attendant fought off a man who allegedly attempted to rob the station at gunpoint early today and chased the robber out of the store, police said.
Canton police arrested Carlos Omar Santiago, 35, of Stoughton, shortly after the incident. A not-guilty plea was entered on Santiago’s behalf at his arraignment today in Stoughton District Court on charges of armed assault with intent to rob and assault and battery, according to a court clerk. He was held on $100,000 cash bail.
Around 12:03 a.m. Friday, police responded to a panic alarm at Austin’s Mobil station on Washington Street, a Canton police statement said.
When the clerk tried to tell the man he did not have access to any money, the robber came around the counter. At that point, the clerk began to fight with him and chased the robber away without anything being stolen, the statement said. The clerk sustained a minor injury in the struggle.
Using surveillance videos and the clerk’s description of the robber, police were able to identify Santiago and arrest him without incident, the statement said.
