A bear has been spotted several times in Burlington, sparking interest and earning the animal its own Twitter handle.

Most recently, the bear was seen on Monday evening behind the Barnes & Noble on Middlesex Turnpike, across from the Burlington Mall, according to Burlington Cable Access Television, which obtained a video from Burlington police.

State Environmental Police were made aware of a sighting on Sunday just after 5:30 p.m., according to Katie Gronendyke, a spokeswoman for the department.

“The bear did not present a public safety threat, so Burlington Police monitored the situation until the bear left the area,” she said in an email to “Environmental Police have not been notified of any other bear sightings in Burlington.”

On Friday, Burlington Animal Control posted a video of the bear, along with a statement.

“We are aware of the presence of a bear in town and [there] is no need for concern but we also ask that everyone stay away from the bear, if people start gathering it could create a situation that could put the bear in danger and possibly the public,” animal control said.

Gronendyke provided some information from the state on what to do if you see a bear, as well as on their habits and habitat

As for what the bear thinks of all this, frustration was expressed on its Twitter account:
