What Bostonians need to know this week

Hundreds of volunteers placed flags on Boston Common for Memorial Day to honor the roughly 37,000 Massachusetts service personnel who have given their lives since the Revolutionary War.

What to know this week:

Thank you for your service: For the past decade, tens of thousands of flags have been placed on Boston Common, a solemn display honoring service members who have died defending the nation. Now, this stunning installation is slowly becoming a movement with Texas, Louisiana, Ohio, and Canada all creating their own displays.

Weird weather: The week begins chilly with temps in the 50s, but it warms up quickly into the 80s on Tuesday, followed by 60s and 70s for the rest of the week. Fortunately, it is expected to stay dry.

Pride Week begins soon: Boston Pride Week kicks off on Friday with Gov. Charlie Baker and Mayor Marty Walsh scheduled to take part in raising the rainbow flag at City Hall Plaza. The annual parade is scheduled for Saturday, June 9.

What you missed over the weekend:

See you next season, Celtics: The C’s lost to Lebron James (oops, the Cavs) on Sunday night in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals with a final score of 87-79. It was the first close game of the series — and the lowest-scoring. James played all 48 minutes for his sixth straight Game 7 win.

Boston called, thousands answered: Boston Calling brought music, events, and noticeably shorter food lines to Harvard Athletic Complex this weekend. The Killers, Eminem, and more performed over the course of the three-day event.

Investigation into Harvard arrest: Cambridge officials announced that Roderick L. Ireland, the former chief justice of the Supreme Judicial Court, will conduct an independent investigation into the arrest of a black Harvard University student last month. A video of the arrest showed an officer grabbing the legs of Selorm Ohene, who was naked and visibly distressed.

International news: In Ireland, citizens voted to repeal the country’s constitutional abortion ban. In Ukraine, Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 to win its third consecutive Champions League title, thanks to a stellar scissor-kick goal from Gareth Bale. In Korea, the North and South Korean leaders met for a surprise summit Saturday.

What’s happening in Boston:

New book on Bobby Kennedy: Kerry Kennedy, daughter of Robert F. Kennedy, will discuss her new book, “Robert F. Kennedy: Ripples of Hope,” on Wednesday at the JFK Presidential Library and Museum. She will talk with Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund, and LaDonna Harris, founder and president of Americans for Indian Opportunity, about Bobby Kennedy’s leadership and influence.

UMass gets feedback: Several UMass Boston students and staff members have signed up to speak publicly at a trustee committee meeting on Wednesday to discuss mental health, international enrollments, and more.

Rock on: Mastodon, the heavy metal band from Atlanta, is on tour with Primus and playing the Blue Hills Bank Pavilion on Tuesday. The band earned a 2017 Grammy for a single off their seventh studio album, “Emperor of Sand,” released last year.
