Local McDonald’s restaurants are rolling out an app that will enable customers to get “value offers and coupons on their smartphones,’’ the company said.

The free app, now available in the New England and Albany, N.Y., region, can be downloaded by customers with iPhones or Android smartphones.

The New England/Albany area is the third market in the country to roll out the McD App.

“The McD App is available for download in the App Store for Apple devices and in the Google Play marketplace for Android devices,’’ McDonald’s USA LLC said. ’’Customers can also download the app by scanning the QR code on merchandising posted in McDonald’s restaurants. In addition to coupons, the McD App offers a menu listing and restaurant locator. New deals will be available every six weeks.’’

Customers who download the McD App can initially qualify for such options as a free large sandwich when they download the app; a buy one Egg McMuffin, get one free deal, and a dollar off any McWrap, the company said.

“The launch of our new McD App allows us another great way to communicate deals to our local customers,’’ Nicole DiNoia, McDonald’s Boston Region spokesperson, said in a statement.

McDonald’s has about 14,000 restaurants in the US.

Customers can now log online for free at any of the 11,500 participating Wi-Fi enabled McDonald’s in the US, the company said.
