Così Restaurant Chain to Move Headquarters to Boston

Restaurant chain Così will soon move its headquarters from Chicago to Boston, company officials announced today.

“I think the primary reason is Così has a lot of work to do in terms of our growth,’’ said company marketing director Marc Lapides. “And, we want to be in a market where our most successful restaurants are so that on a daily basis we can be directly involved with the restaurants that are the best in our system.’’

And the company’s new CEO, R.J. Dourney, has lived in Boston for many years.

The company’s headquarters will be housed in an office space on Milk Street in downtown Boston above a Così restaurant location, he said.

It plans to move there by early June.

“Chicago’s a great market, too. It’s one of our largest,’’ said Lapides. “But we’re located in the upper suburbs of the city and it’s not too close to many of our restaurants here.’’

He said the company has not yet determined which employees will be relocated and what the employee relocation process will entail. He said there is also no word yet on whether the move could be coupled with hiring new workers or laying some off.

“It’s all very new to us,’’ said Lapides. But he described Dourney as being a firm believer in business morals and ethics.

“He’ll do everything to make sure folks are treated the way they should be treated.’’

There are 72 company-owned and 49 franchise Così restaurants operating in 16 states, the District of Columbia, Costa Rica and the United Arab Emirates, according to Lapides.

“The company’s excited about the move and we think it will be great for us and great for our customers,’’ he said.

The Boston Business Journal previously reported on the announcement of Così’s relocation plan.
