Market Basket employees are expected to stage a walkout this morning at company headquarters in Tewksbury in support of ousted CEO Arthur T. Demoulas.

A scarce handful of company employees showed up for work at headquarters on Friday.

Tewskbury Police have estimated that more than 2,000 people were on the scene for the rally, which was planned for 10 a.m.

Market Basket employees on Friday morning issued an open letter apologizing to customers “in the hopes that you will understand our actions that we have taken today.’’

Employees also posted a message on the Save Market Basket Facebook page saying employees met with Thornton and Gooch at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Market Basket district manager Tom Trainor confirmed the plan to He said the walkout might also apply to Market Basket drivers, who are centered in the Tewksbury warehouse. “They may choose not to go to work tomorrow,’’ Trainor said. That action would, presumably, have an effect on Market Basket stores’ stocks.

Market Basket’s co-CEOs, Felicia Thornton and Jim Gooch, wrote a letter to employees Thursday, threatening to fire anybody who walks out on the job. But employees at the company’s Tewksbury headquarters appear ready to put their jobs on the line.
