Bose Sues Beats Over Headphone Patents

The really expensive headphones war has a new battleground: the courthouse.

Bose, the Framingham-based electronics manufacturer best known for its sound systems and noise-cancelling headphones, filed a patent infringement lawsuit today against Beats, the Dr. Dre-founded, now Apple-owned headphones manufacturer.

In the complaint, which TechCrunch has in full, Bose accuses Beats of using its patented Adaptive Noise Cancellation technology in its Studio headphones line. The suit says Beats has continued to do this even after Bose notified it of the violations.

Bose is seeking an injunction to stop Beats from selling those headphones and damages from Beats to be determined by the court.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Bose said, in part: “For over 30 years, Bose has made significant investments in the research, development, engineering and design of the proprietary technologies found in our headphones … We are committed to protecting our investment, protecting our customers, and defending the patents we own.’’

Apple did not immediately respond to request for comment.
