Trader Joe’s is headed for Somerville next year, the company announced Friday.
The grocer will bring a 12,500-square-foot store to Assembly Square. It will also sell wine and beer, and is slated to open in the third quarter of 2017.
The company said the store will be located at 133 Middlesex Ave., which is the current listed address for the Sports Authority in the Assembly Square Marketplace. Sports Authority recently announced plans to close all of its stores.
However, a Trader Joe’s spokesperson said in an email that the company will occupy “a portion of the AC Moore space,” which is located next door to Sports Authority in the marketplace complex.
Assembly Square’s developers sought to build a grocery store at a different site there in 2012 and 2013. The idea was later abandoned, and Partners HealthCare’s new office facility was built in that planned location instead.
A Stop & Shop is located near Assembly Square, along Route 28.
Trader Joe’s has one store in Boston, one in Brookline, two in Cambridge, and one in Arlington. It operates 18 in Massachusetts and more than 400 across the country.
