An East Boston man was arrested Thursday after allegedly brandishing a knife outside an East Boston elementary school, Boston police said in a statement Monday.

Around 8:40 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to the area of 218 Marion St. for a report of a man with a knife outside the Otis Elementary School.

Police said they quickly found the 36-year-old suspect and arrested him. He appeared to be heavily intoxicated and was carrying a 9-inch kitchen knife, according to the statement.

Witnesses told police the suspect threatened several parents accompanying their children to school, police said.

The suspect allegedly showed the knife to one woman and threatened her while she walked past him with her 4-year-old son. The victim told police she grabbed her son and crossed the street to avoid any further interaction with the suspect.

The 36-year-old was charged with four counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, police said. He was expected to be arraigned in court on Friday.
