Ex-officer admits trying to send sexual messages to child

BOSTON (AP) — A former reserve police officer and patrol officer at a Massachusetts college has pleaded guilty to trying to send sexually explicit images to a child.

Federal prosecutors say 28-year-old Cliff Oliveira, of Somerset, pleaded guilty in federal court in Boston on Tuesday.

Olivera was a reserve officer for the Somerset Police Department and a patrol officer at Massasoit Community College.

Prosecutors say he came to authorities’ attention after he sent sexually explicit messages to a 13-year-old girl in South Carolina on the messaging app Kik.

They say he went by the screen name “samuricop” and told her he was a police officer.

Undercover officers then set up a profile for a fictitious 14-year-old girl, and he sent her sexually explicit messages.

Olivera is scheduled for sentencing on Feb. 28.
