Juvenile charged in fatal Newburyport pedestrian crash

A male juvenile has been charged in connection with a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred in Newburyport on November 23, police said in a statement.

The 17-year-old Boxford teen was charged with motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, texting and being negligent causing injury to another, being an operator under the age of 18 using a mobile phone (civil infraction), and texting while driving (civil infraction), according to the statement.

Around 1:30 p.m. on November 23, police and firefighters responded to State Street for reports of a pedestrian hit by a motor vehicle while crossing the street.

The victim, 77-year-old Richard Barbieri, of Newburyport, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries, according to police. He was later pronounced dead.

The teen is expected to appear in juvenile court at a later date, police said.
