Cape Cod teen gets up to 18 years for fatally stabbing his stepfather

Cole Martin, 18, of Harwich, said he committed the crime "to protect" his mother.

BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) — A Massachusetts teenager who pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing his stepfather told a judge he did it “to protect my mother.”

The Cape Cod Times reports that 18-year-old Cole Martin was sentenced to up to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter Wednesday in the January 2017 stabbing death of 43-year-old James Dean in a Yarmouth hotel room.

Martin was 16 at the time but his case was handled in adult court because of the seriousness of the charges.

Martin said Dean was abusive toward him and his mother.

Authorities say Martin and his mother lived in Harwich at the time, but his mother had gone to the motel to visit Dean.

After the stabbing, the teen called police to tell them what he did.
