A 52-year-old Whitman man indecently assaulted a 16-year-old girl aboard a Silver Line bus traveling toward South Station Sunday night, authorities allege.

John Reed was arrested after MBTA Transit Police officers were called to the station around 9:45 p.m., according to a statement from the department.

On arrival, the victim told authorities she was indecently assaulted by a man, later identified as Reed, while aboard the bus, officials said.

“Witnesses and the victim pointed out Reed, who remained on the bus,” the statement says. “As the officers were speaking with the victim, Reed displayed his middle finger at her.”

Reed was uncooperative when police tried to arrest him and “dropped his body to the floor when officers attempted to place him in hand restraints,” authorities said.

At transit police headquarters, where Reed was brought for booking, police smelled alcohol emanating from him, officials said.
