Victim identified in fatal hit-and-run in Somerville

A Roxbury man is being charged in connection with the incident.

The victim in Saturday’s fatal hit-and-run has been identified as a 52-year-old Somerville woman, and a Roxbury man has been charged.

Cheryl Pauline Richards was walking along Mystic Avenue southbound in Somerville when she was struck in a crosswalk south of Route 28, near Stop and Shop, before 8 p.m., according to state police. She was brought to Massachusetts General Hospital and pronounced dead.

Zewdu Abate Gedamu, 64, has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash resulting in personal injury or death, plus a crosswalk violation. Gedamu could face more charges as the investigation continues, authorities said.

Gedamu was allegedly driving a 2008 Mercedes-Benz E350 when the vehicle struck Richards. He then fled the scene, according to police.

On Sunday, authorities said Gedamu turned himself in. He was ordered held on $1,000 bail and was set for arraignment Monday morning in Somerville District Court.
