Update: Hingham gunman taken into custody after firing shots at SWAT team. Area deemed safe.

Police responded to an active shooter near the Hingham shipyard Saturday morning.

The gunman who fired shots at a SWAT team near the Hingham shipyard Saturday morning was taken into custody, Hingham police said in a tweet at around 12:50 p.m.

Police lifted the shelter in place minutes after the subject was taken into custody and the area was deemed safe. The shelter in place was first issued at around 9:30 a.m.

“We have a barricaded subject inside home on HMS Fitzroy Dr. with a gun who fired shots at the SWAT team,” Hingham police tweeted Saturday morning. “This is a very active scene and we are working to negotiate with subject who is alone in house.”

Police asked the public not to post pictures or videos of police or SWAT locations. “This can threaten their safety,” Hingham police tweeted.

Neighbors were told to evacuate, and police used a reverse 911 call to notify residents in the area and tell them to shelter in place. Around 11 a.m., Hingham officials opened Foster Elementary School as a place for “anyone who needs to stay inside a warm shelter,” police tweeted. “We have buses available to help transport people who need to stay indoors.”

At around noon, Hingham police said negotiations continued with the barricaded person.
