Transit police arrested a Dorchester man Sunday night after he “viciously attacked” another man for allegedly looking at the woman he was with, authorities said in a release.

Thomas Cowans, 27, allegedly attacked the 29-year-old victim around 9:20 p.m. as he entered the fare gates at the Downtown Crossing MBTA station. Cowans accused the man of “looking at his female companion,” police said.

“Cowans proceeded to punch and kick the victim about his face, head and body,” police said, adding that he also attempted to take the victim’s cellphone. “Cowans and his female companion then proceeded to the platform where Transit Police officers located and placed him into custody.”

During the booking process, officers said they discovered Cowans was in possession of a controlled Class E substance that he didn’t have a prescription for.

He’s now facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, attempted unarmed robbery, and possession of a controlled substance.
