Man facing aggravated assault charge after allegedly trying to rob a woman at a Boston golf course

Police were called to the scene around 4:44 p.m. Sunday.

A Boston man is facing an aggravated assault charge after he allegedly tried to rob a woman at Franklin Park Golf Course on Sunday.

Authorities were called to the area around 4:44 p.m. for a report of shots fired, according to police. The suspect, Wayne Straw, 38, of Dorchester, had allegedly approached a woman and tried to rob her, putting his hands around her neck and threatening to kill her.

A witness, who is licensed to carry a gun, went up to them to try to intervene, police said. Straw then allegedly reached toward his waistband and made more threats. At that time, the witness “discharged a single round away from any persons or property,” according to police. Others in the area then called 911 for shots fired.

Police arrested Straw, and he’s scheduled to appear in West Roxbury District Court. The witness voluntarily turned over his gun and license to carry with the investigation continuing, according to authorities.
