Westerly schools to allow student smartphones

The Westerly School Committee has approved a plan to allow students from kindergarten through 12th grade to bring their smartphones to school and turn them on during certain times in classrooms for instructional purposes. WJAR-TV reported that the School Committee unanimously approved the change in policy starting in September. Currently, students must keep their phones off while in school. Westerly Superintendent Roy Seitsinger Jr. said they are acknowledging that many students already own cellphones, and they are looking at ways to use the technology in a prudent and productive way.
