The U.S. News & World Report annual rankings of public high schools arrived Tuesday — and Massachusetts was well represented.

Three high schools in the Bay State ranked among the top 100 overall nationwide: Boston Latin School ranked No. 36, Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School in Hadley ranked No. 40, and Advanced Math and Science Academy Charter School in Marlborough ranked No. 93.

Over 17,800 schools across the country were evaluated for the yearly round-up, according to the publication.

“Families can use the Best High Schools rankings to see how schools compare at the national, state and local level on factors like graduation rates and college readiness,” Anita Narayan, managing editor of education at U.S. News, said in a statement. “The rankings also provide insight into academic performance among underserved groups showing how well schools are supporting these students.”

More specifically, the methodology behind the rankings spans six factors: reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, college readiness, underserved student performance, college curriculum breadth, and graduation rates.

Data reviewed for the 2021 rankings was collected from the 2018-2019 school year “and therefore was not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,” the publication says.

One-hundred-sixty-one schools in Massachusetts — or approximately 46.3 percent — were ranked in the top 25 percent nationally — a higher percent than any other state. Connecticut, with 43.9 percent of its schools ranked in the top quarter, and Maryland, with 40.6 percent, rounded out the top three.

In total, schools across New England held nearly two dozen of the top 100 rankings across four categories: best high schools, best charter schools, best magnet schools, and best STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) schools.
