Here’s how local contestants on ‘The Voice’ did during challenge week

"This very well may be their best performance to date."

It’s challenge week on NBC’s “The Voice” and the two contestants with local ties sang two popular songs outside their usual genres.

For Jim and Sasha Allen — the father and son duo from Newtown, Connecticut on Team Ariana — this week’s challenge song was “Stay” by Rihanna, an emotional pop song. The Allens, who were saved from elimination after placing in the bottom two last week, normally sing older classics with Jim playing an accompanying instrument.

“They’re so brilliant,” their coach Ariana Grande said before the performance. “This very well may be their best performance to date.”

After their live performance, the coaches emphasized the emotion in their performance and complimented their take on the heartbreaking song.

“I’m so happy that America saved you and gave us a chance to hear that beautiful rendition today,” Coach John Legend said. “What a beautiful version of that song…my favorite parts of your performance were when I heard the heartache in your voice.”

“Sasha you have a really cool rasp about your voice and then Jim you have this beautiful, broken, painful thing that is so heartbreaking,” Coach Kelly Clarkson said. “It was just so well executed.”

Meanwhile Lana Scott, the former Berklee College of Music student on Team Blake, sang a rendition of Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away.” Scott introduced a hint of her own country sound into the pop hit, which the coaches said made the song sound as her own.

“One week you sing something that isn’t country, you decide to take on one of the biggest and most perfectly written pop songs ever from one of the best pop albums of all time,” Grande said. “I think it was a beautiful rendition, and you brought Lana into it.”

“I don’t see any reason that we wouldn’t hear you singing that on country radio because you made it work,” her coach Blake Shelton said. “That’s the definition of what challenge week is.”

During Tuesday night’s show, these two contestants will see if they are moving on to next week or being sent home. Voting is open until 7 a.m. Eastern Standard Time Tuesday on the NBC website.
