BOSTON (AP) — The Massachusetts unemployment rate has dropped to its lowest point in 15 years.
The state office of Labor and Workforce Development said Thursday that the August jobless rate fell to 3.9 percent in August from 4.1 percent in July.
Unemployment has not been as low as 3.9 percent in the Bay State since August 2001, before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Officials said preliminary estimates from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show the state gained 5,900 jobs last month and has now added an estimated 61,000 jobs since the start of this year.
The bureau did revise slightly downward its estimate of job growth in July, saying Massachusetts gained 5,800 jobs that month instead of the previous estimate of 7,300 new jobs.
