Recently, my mother, who has a blood disorder and memory loss, developed breathing problems. Eight-three and living in Florida, she was shuffled among three specialists with no coordination of treatment. My mother was overwhelmed, and I was not medically literate enough to help her. Denise, a nurse, helped me sort through tests and gave me language to get to the bottom of my mother’s medical complexity. She’s a fabulous listener, very intelligent, and so generous. She explained things better than most doctors.
