Martha is the school nurse at the Stratton Elementary School in Arlington. She wears many hats during a typical day. Keeping our school community informed of health issues is one area she covers. Over the course of a school year, Martha updates parents on a variety of illnesses, immunization and dental clinics, and product recall notices. With so much information flying around, it is comforting to know someone is looking out for our families.
Every year Martha presents “The Talk’’ to the 5th graders. You know, maturing bodies and all that. I can’t imagine having to discuss body parts with 55 pre-teens!
Soon Martha’s Spring Walking Club for 4th and 5th graders will begin. She plans weekly walks around the community starting at 7:15 a.m. as a healthy way to start the day. It is amazing how quickly my daughter gets ready on those mornings.
What makes Martha very special is how the kids view her. Her office is a safe place to be. Sometimes it’s a place to decompress and get a smile. Whether they’ve had a hard bump or skinned a new, kids know Mrs. Benes will take care of them with warmth and humor.
