Glassdoor, which compiles employee reviews, just released its annual list of the Best Places to Work for 2015. For the first time since the list began, Internet search giant Google took Glassdoor’s top honors.

While this might be great news for Google, it’s bad news for Boston-based Bain & Company. The consulting firm moved down a notch this year to take the Glassdoor silver medal.

But Bain & Co. shouldn’t feel down about coming in second. The firm has been on Glassdoor’s list for all seven years the rankings have been produced.

All in all, Glassdoor’s report has good news for Boston-based companies. A total of six companies based in the Greater Boston area are recognized, making Boston the second-most represented metro area on the list.

Only the San Francisco Bay area, where Google is based, outperformed Boston in terms of hosting more top companies. The San Francisco metro area has a host of major tech players in its backyard, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Adobe. Meanwhile, the New York City metro area placed third with five companies.

In addition to Bain & Company, the other local companies on Glassdoor’s list are Boston Consulting Group (No. 5), Brigham and Women’s Hospital (No. 12), MathWorks (No. 19), Massachusetts General Hospital (No. 28), and Bose (No. 46).

In addition to its “Best Places to Work’’ list, Glassdoor also released its annual report of the “50 Best Small & Medium Companies to Work For.’’ A total of four Boston-area companies are represented on this list, including Hubspot (No. 15), Hill Holiday (No. 33), VMTurbo (No. 40), and Analysis Group (No. 41).

The Boston area didn’t perform as well on this list. With four smaller companies on Glassdoor’s ranking, Boston came in fourth behind San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and New York City.
