Healthcare, higher education, retail, and finance dominated the Boston Business Journal‘s latest list of the largest employers in Massachusetts.

The 2016 ranking of the 50 biggest employers, which excludes government workers, included companies that employ over 410,000 Bay State employees.

Partners HealthCare came in at No. 1, with over 67,600 Massachusetts employees, followed by the University of Massachusetts, The Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC (New England Division), and Harvard University, in that order.

Other organizations that made the top 10 include Steward Health Care System (17,325 employees), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (15,768 employees), and UMass Memorial Health Care (13,556 employees).

Healthcare has long been recognized as one of Massachusetts largest sectors, and, as the BBJ notes, the 13 healthcare companies on the list alone comprise more than 172,366 employees, including some temp and per diem workers.

After healthcare, higher ed reigns, with the seven higher education institutions on the list employing 80,777 Massachusetts workers.
