High bail set in hammer attack on woman

A Lowell woman pleaded not guilty at her arraignment in Middlesex Superior Court Monday to charges of larceny and armed assault with intent to murder in an alleged attack with a claw hammer on a 41-year-old woman, also from Lowell, the Middlesex district attorney’s office said. In June, police found the victim on the floor of an apartment building on Branch Street in Lowell suffering from severe head wounds. Prosecutors said that the defendant, Jessica Garcia, 33, had an altercation with the woman and struck her several times in the head with the hammer. Middlesex Superior Court Judge Janet Kenton-Walker ordered Garcia held on $250,000 cash bail.
