For some plants, liquid diet will do

Almost all plants can be grown hydroponically. A list of fruited plants that authorities say are well suited to growing in water includes tomatoes, green and red peppers (above, at Hydroponics Etc. in Carver), eggplants, cucumbers, green beans, squash, melons, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy, peas (standard and edible pod), green onions, “stubby’’ varieties of carrots, and strawberries.

Greens and light herbs, which require less intense light than fruited plants, can also be grown hydroponically. They include lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, kale, sprouts, basil, dill, chives, oregano, basil, cilantro, and parsley.
