North Reading Subaru is sponsoring a “Lots of Love Microchip Event’’ from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 19, giving dog and cat owners the opportunity to have their pets outfitted with a HomeAgain microchip, a form of permanent pet identification. The procedure is similar to administering a vaccine or a routine shot; it requires no anesthetic. A microchipped pet that becomes lost and is taken to an animal shelter or veterinarian can be identified quickly by passing a microchip scanner over the pet’s shoulderblades. The scanner emits a low radio frequency that allows an identification code to be transmitted, identifying the pet and allowing HomeAgain to retrieve the owner’s contact information. Harbor Vets is donating its time to implant the microchips. The cost for the procedure is $20. The event is being held at North Reading Subaru, 260 Main St. For more information, visit northreadingsubaru.com/lots-of-love-microchip-event.htm.
