Danilo Lopez got a taste of the American dream, but now faces being thrown out of the country. The 23-year-old from Chiapas, Mexico, has been a key leader in the lobbying work that culminated Wednesday with Governor Peter Shumlin’s signing a new type of Vermont driver’s license that can be obtained by people in the United States illegally. Lopez said his activism began when he was a passenger in a car that was pulled over by State Police nearly two years ago and he was turned over to federal immigration authorities. That began a process that led to a final appeal being rejected last week. He has been ordered to leave the country by July 5.
