New Hampshire looking for next poet laureate

New Hampshire is taking nominations for its next poet laureate. The state’s most recent poet laureate, Walter Butts, died in March at age 68. The selection process is being coordinated by the Poetry Society of New Hampshire, the State Council on the Arts, and the New Hampshire Writers’ Project. For the first time, the position includes a yearly honorarium of $500. Nominations for the five-year post are being accepted through Sept. 13, with an announcement planned Nov. 6. The term would start in January. Established by the Legislature in 1967, the position is held by someone who has made outstanding contributions to the field of poetry. Nominees must live in New Hampshire and must have published at least one full-length book of poetry.
