Investigators searched the remains of an old mill building in Lawrence today, trying to determine the cause of the five-alarm fire that gutted the vacant and dilapidated structure on Monday.

Lawrence Mayor Dan Rivera said the investigation of the fire at the former Merrimac Paper Co. building at 9 South Canal St. was expected to be completed within the next 48 hours.

“This fire has impacted the entire community as one of our historical landmarks was lost in the fire. I appreciate the courageous efforts of the Lawrence firefighters, as well as those of the surrounding community fire departments for providing much needed mutual aid,’’ he said in a statement.

Lawrence police, fire, and inspectional services officials are working on the probe with State Police from the state fire marshal’s office and state building inspectors, Rivera said.

No further information will be released until the investigation is complete, said Rivera.
